Amazon.co.uk Review

A major Columbia Pictures release in glorious Technicolor, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad was one of Hollywood's first modern fantasy action blockbusters. On a mission to rescue his fiancée, the Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant), Kerwin Mathews acquits himself well as Sinbad, while Torin Thatcher is a suitably malevolent magician who has shrunken the princess in a bid to get Sinbad to undertake a perilous quest. Truth be told, no one remembers Ray Harryhausen films for the script or the acting; the real stars are the still impressive action set-pieces, a battle with a cyclops, a giant Roc, a dragon, and a duelling skeleton; this last anticipating a much more lavish battle with skeleton warriors in Jason and the Argonauts. The cast may be all-American rather than Arab but even so, everything about this film works, from the fabulous set design of the Sultan's palace which evokes a real fairytale atmosphere, to Bernard Herrmann's truly classic score.

On the DVD: The film exhibits a strong anamorphically enhanced 1.85-1 ratio image, with powerful mono sound. At about 80 minutes, the extras last almost as long as the movie. The most important and extensive addition is "The Harryhausen Chronicles", a documentary, while "This is Dynamation" gives an introduction to the stop-motion animation process itself. Ray Harryhausen is an affable host, a modest man who talks engagingly about his work in a way that really makes one appreciate the sheer ingenuity and skill which went into making not just The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, but also Jason and the Argonauts, the subject of a further featurette on the disc. On top of this there are trailers for the aforementioned films, plus one for the disappointing but still fun Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Overall, a first-class film on an equally good DVD. --Gary S. Dalkin

4.0 out of 5 stars An Arabian Nights Classic!, 21 Jul 2003
We've all seen these movies a dozen times as they always seem to be a staple of Christmas TV but the DVD editions of Ray Harryhausen's monster movies are a great buy nonetheless - no more advert interruptions for one thing!

The only real problem is that the films themselves are pretty pedestrian and don't live up to the innovation and character of Harryhausen's stop-motion creatures. 7th Voyage definitely has a good crop - the horned Cyclops, the Roc, the Dragon and the living skeleton (a dry run for the unbelievable sequence in the later Jason and the Argonauts). Ray Harryhausen was, amazingly, a one man operation who never even had an assistant to help creating the effects. The great designs and the individual characters he created for the monsters are the reason thirtysomethings like me were over the moon to finally be able to get these films to own.

One thing still makes me chuckle - Kerwin Matthews is a pretty white-bread Sinbad with his cleanshaven face and 50's crewcut! By the time of the later Golden Voyage the producers obviously felt comfortable enough to ethinicise Sinbad a bit and give him a turban, beard and funny "arabian" accent.

The great addition on this disk in the documentary "The Harryhausen Chronicles" narrated by Leanoard Nimoy. It has some fascinating footage of stuff Harryhausen did as a teenager in his parent's garage (which is amazingly professional) and some charming shorts for a series of fairy stories (Hansel and Gretel, etc.) plus the great man himself talking about his career and how he approached the different scenes and creatures he created. This disk is a fine tribute to a master and innovator in the field of special effects and easily one of the most influential film makers in history.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, 25 Jun 2006
By Dave Kraven (Burbage, UK) - See all my reviews

One of the best and most visually impressive of the Sinbad movies, the story follows Captain Sinbad and his crew on a perilous journey to find a magic lamp that's guarded by an array of fantastic looking monsters, which includes a 30ft-tall cyclops, a fire-breathing dragon and a two-headed bird, after Sokurah the Magician orders him to. The cast are well picked with outstanding performances from Kerwin Matthews as Sinbad and Kathryn Grant as the beautiful Princess Parisa but Torin Thatcher's portrayal of the evil Sokurah makes him one of the best villains I've ever seen. Yet they're all overshadowed by the wonderful stop-motion effects of the monsters, thanks to the brilliant mind of Ray Harryhausen, and the vivacious points-of-view of the island that really steal the show which makes this a definite family favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic film and an indispensable resource., 17 May 2000
This film is just great fun to watch. It was the first appearance of Dynamation, Ray Harryhausens special brand of stop-motion animation, and it was in colour. For this alone it is worth buying. However, if you are a budding animator then this DVD is an absolutely essential purchase. The extra features will teach you more about the art and techniques of animation then practically any other DVD on the market. The disk is full of features on Ray Harryhausen's work from his first dinosaur animation made in his garage at home to his masterpiece 'Jason and the Argonauts' with insights into how and why he did things.

It is amazing to think that modern films have huge teams of animators to produce their creatures and effects. This film had a team of one : Ray Harryhausen. Enjoy !
